Sara Silkin (film director & choreographer)
Collaboration with LACDC: LOST MIND: Problemes Manteux | Dance Film
Now might be the right time to tell you, Sara Silkin is blind in her left eye and writes about the things she can’t clearly see– her memories. By going back and capturing the smallest gestures to the largest leaps of faith, she creates work that moves you viscerally through her unique approach to storytelling as a choreographer, writer, and director.
In 2018, she had the opportunity to motion capture and choreograph for Refik Anadol’s live installation projected on Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 100th Anniversary. Silkin’s stage work has been presented at LACMA, Diavalo, Electric Lodge Theater, LA Fashion Week, CONGRESS:Legalize Dance, The Getty Museum, and The Centre Pompidou Museum in Paris, France. She has choreographed concerts for the band Hundred Waters at Coachella, The El Rey Theater, and The Music Hall of Williamsburg. Her commercial credits include Samsung, Converse, Adidas for movement direction, and she has closely collaborated with directors on music videos from ideation to production for Perfume Genius, IDK, Joseph, and many others.
As a performer Sara Silkin has danced for Heidi Duckler Dance Theater, Hysterica Dance Company, AXIOM, Ballet Red, Arrogant Elbow, and was the principal dancer in Secret Cinema’s immersive three-week concert for Laura Marling in London.
Sara Silkin holds her BA from UCLA and her MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where she was awarded The John Houston Directing Scholarship and Kodak grant. She is thrilled to be commissioned by Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company to choreograph, write and direct her short dance narrative film LOST MIND: Problemes Manteux.
Sara Silkin choreographed and acted in the animated short film JIBARO by Oscar and Emmy winning director Alberto Mieglo. JIBARO is part of Netflix anthology series Love, Death + Robots.
